Se establece la NORMA Oficial Mexicana NOM-059-ECOL-1994
e incluye a la especie en la categoría Sujeta a Protección Especial (Pr).

Cultivo y comercio legal
Se registran los primeros viveros dedicados a la reproducción
y venta de ejemplares autorizados por la Secretaría de Medio
Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (SEMARNAT).

Alerta mundial
Se publica en la Lista Roja de la Unión Internacional para la Conservación
de la Naturaleza (IUCN) como Casi Amenazado (NT).

Cambio de categoría de riesgo
Se aprobó la inclusión a la categoría más alta de
la NORMA Oficial Mexicana NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010;
En Peligro de Extinción (P) para mayor protección.
